ELDRED — In its first baseball poll of the season, the New York State Sportswriters Association has chosen the undefeated the Sullivan West/Jeffersonville-Youngsville Trojans as the number one Class D baseball team in the state.

The team’s record is 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.

As reported in the Times Herald Record, Coach Dan Hart learned of the sportswriters’ choice last Monday.

The Trojans haven’t had a winning season since 1996.

What has taken the Trojans this far is their pitching and their batting. They have a team ERA of 3.15 and a team batting average of .443.

After learning of the poll, the Trojans went out to defeat Eldred 6-1 last Wednesday in what was a pitcher’s duel up to the final inning, when Jeff-Youngsville salted away the win with three more runs. They had been leading 3-1 all through the game.

Maynard Schmidt, the winning pitcher, had 12 strikeouts, giving up five walks and limiting Eldred to four hits.

Eldred’s pitcher, Craig Vandermark, who pitched well, had six strikeouts, gave up seven walks and five hits up until the ninth.

Eric Youmans drove in the first run in the first inning with a shot to the outfield. Jeff-Youngsville’s second RBI came on an error by Eldred.

Jeff-Youngsville’s Ryan O’Mara went two for four with two RBIs, Jim Christiansen was one for one with an RBI and pitcher Schmidt had one RBI. Kyle Bright was three for three but had no RBIs.

Eldred’s run came when Jason Rodinelli’s infield drive was bobbled as Steve Degerdon, who had been walked, raced home from third.

“We knew that Eldred was going to give us a run for the money,” Hart said. “[Coach] Frank McKean’s teams are always ready to play.”

Eldred threatened a number of times but Jeff-Youngsville was able to nip every rally in the bud.
