Creating a better newspaper

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The River Reporter was recognized for its editorials, feature photos, and creative advertising campaigns in the 1999 Better Newspaper Contest. The annual contest, held in conjunction with the spring convention of the New York Press Association was held this past weekend in Saratoga Springs.

River Reporter staff Jill Padua, Tom Petito, Chris Conroy, Laurie Stuart, Helen Diehl, and Mary Greene demonstrate the "Putting the face on local news" campaign which garnered the paper a second place award in Best House Ad Campaign.

The paper won a second place award its eight-part house ad campaign entitled "Putting a face on local news." In each of the segments, staff faces were obscured by tools of the trade. The judges commented that they "liked the personal approach, good design, and good information."

David Hulse won a third place award for his feature photograph of the Civil War enactment held in Liberty and the editorial staff was honored for its editorial writing.
