Yulan wearin’ the green
By DAVID HULSE

YULAN — It was cold and it was windy and it didn’t really matter.

Last Sunday was St. Patrick’s Day in Yulan, at least for purposes of parades, so hundreds of onlookers and marchers ignored the weather and celebrated the 29th anniversary of this Sullivan County original, which has become a regional favorite.

Parade organizers once again judged the best of the floats and bands. This year’s top three best floats were those of area Girl Scouts troops, "Girls Scouts Change the World, the Eldred American Legion Ambulance’s "Future EMS" and the Colonial Restaurant’s "Fish that Drinks Like an Irishman."

The best three bands were the Maple City Ancient Fife and Drum Corps of Honesdale, the Broome Street All-Stars of Port Jervis and the Eldred Central School Pep Band.

Some 18 area fire departments participated with trucks and marchers. Named best among the marching firefighters were the Neversink Company of Port Jervis and volunteers from Wurtsboro. Kauneonga Lake’s truck was named the best appearing apparatus and Lumberland took second prize. The award for best appearing company overall went to Smallwood-Mongaup Valley.
