Born to be wild
By JILL PADUA
BELDEN HILL — In the February 27 Mud and Snow Scrambles at the
Square Deal Raceway in Belden Hill, Jim Spencer of Honesdale finished
first in the Senior A division.
The track was difficult with mud and water from the melting snow
in the open areas, and ice and solid ground in the woods. Coming
off the start in first place, Spencer fell back to fifth as the
first muddy turn took him down. He regained his lead over the next
five laps, one racer at a time. He was clearly out in front when
he passed the gate going into the last lap.
Spencer has won approximately 300 firsts and 10 track records over
his 30 years racing motorcycles. Spencer won his first American
Motorcycle race in 1970 and, now retiring from racing full-time,
he has taken first place in his final race. Spencer plans to run
only selected events in coming years.

Roscoe
wins Section 9 Class D title, but lose state quarterfinals
By HOWARA ALSTON
ROSCOE — Coming off of their perfect WSL season, Roscoe ended Livingston
Manor’s run by grabbing the Section 9 title. Roscoe has had an excellent
season.
Their journey began with a win against The Family School. They
won 44-11 and more big wins soon followed. Some high scoring games
were the January 22 game against Tri-Valley where they almost tripled
TV’s score with a score of 81-30. The biggest win came in a game
against SW/Narrowsburg, where Roscoe scored a whopping 105 to SW/Narrowsburg’s
33.
This amazing season was lead by head coach Becky Ahart and assistant
coach Chris Russo. Becky Evans contributed to Roscoe’s perfect season.
Also contributing to the effort were Mary Kate Johnston, Jill Spaulding,
Kelly Ahart, Danielle Austin, Amanda Huck, Alexis Eggleton, Crystal
Evans, Stacie Fersch, and Jessica Lake. These girls are a small,
but close team and surely have let the WSL season go out with a
bang.
Roscoe’s run came to an end in Poughkeepsie where they lost the
Class D state quarterfinals. They played against Haldane who beat
them 58-32. Danielle Austin had 15 points and Becky Evans scored
nine for Roscoe, but the Lady Haldane’s were just hitting everything.
Kelly Ahart, Alexis Eggleton, Mary Kate Johnston, and Jill Spaulding
each scored two points for the Lady Blue Devils. This was the final
game for seniors Eggleton, Evans, Johnston, and Spaulding and what
a great season to graduate on.
Congratulations Roscoe!
