RICHARD C. EVANS
HONESDALE — Richard C. Evans of Honesdale, formerly
of Moylan, PA, a retired 27-year building superintendent for the
Provident Trust Company, later the Provident National Bank in Philadelphia,
died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.
He was 91.
Son of the late John Wilstar Evans and Susan Elizabeth
Barlow Evans, he was born August 30, 1908, in Ocean City, NJ.
He was raised in Media, PA and attended Penn Charter
and Swarthmore Preparatory Schools, Weslyan University and graduated
from the University of Miami in 1931. During World War II he worked
as a welder at the Naval Shipyard in Chester. For over 25 years
he was active in the Philadelphia Building Superintendent’s Association,
served as treasurer for three years and became a lifelong member.
After retirement he provided repair and carpentry services for senior
citizens in and around Media.
He had attended the Wallingford Presbyterian Church
in Wallingford and in the past three years the Central United Methodist
Church of Honesdale.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ellen Drake
Evans; a son, Richard Drake of Reading, PA; a daughter, Charlotte
Myers and husband Linus of Honesdale; a sister, Hannah Sparks and
husband George of Bremen, ME; two granddaughters, Kathryn and Anne;
nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Wistar Evans
III.
A memorial service was held in the Wesley Room
at the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale. The Rev. Paul
McCauley officiated. Cremation took place at Salem Crematory in
Archbald, PA.

ALICE S. IRWIN
HONESDALE — Alice S. Rosencranse Irwin of Honesdale
died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center
in Honesdale. She was 81.
Daughter of the late Lester and Anna Reining Rosencranse,
she was born July 20, 1918, in Honesdale. She was the widow of Robert
Irwin Sr.
She grew up in Beach Lake. She was a member of
the Girdland Church and then attended the Central United Methodist
Church in Honesdale. She devoted much of her time to the community,
especially working with the mentally challenged.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Jr. and wife
Carol of Girdland, PA, and David and wife Dona of Dyberry, PA; a
daughter, Carolyn Graff of Hawley; two sisters, Wilma Diehl of Honesdale
and Beth Peck of Narrowsburg; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Grant; a daughter,
Linda Robins; a sister, Joyce Shields; three brothers, Roger, Loren
and Lloyd Rosencranse; and four grandchildren.
Private funeral services were held at the convenience
of the family.
AGNES P. JOHNSTON
ROSCOE — Agnes P. Johnston of Roscoe, a retired
librarian of the Roscoe Central School and Roscoe Free Library and
a 56-year area resident, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at the Westchester
County Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 75.
Daughter of the late John and Anna Suhar Hresko,
she was born July 9, 1924, in Cornwall, PA.
She was a member of the Gate of Heaven Roman Catholic
Church in Roscoe.
Survivors include her husband, C. Nelson Johnston,
at home; a son, Charles N. and wife Cynthia J. and a grandson, James
Robert, all of Shandelee; a sister, Susan Ogurcak of Cornwall, PA;
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, James P.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Gate
of Heaven Church. The Rev. Alfred Croke officiated. Burial was in
St. Aloysius Cemetery in Livingston Manor.

ELAINE KREITNER
HONESDALE — Elaine Kreitner of Honesdale, a nine-year
trustee of the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary, died Saturday,
March 4, 2000, at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale.
She was 81.
Daughter of the late John C. and Lena Poeppel Dorflinger,
she was born August 27, 1918, in Hawley. She was the widow of John
Kreitner.
She graduated from Hawley High School in 1936 and
the Wayne Commercial School in Honesdale. She was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale.
Survivors include two sons, David G. of Coram,
NY and Gary R. of Flower Mound, TX; two brothers, Jack Dorflinger
of Waymart and David Dorflinger of Berlin, NJ; two sisters, Mary
Lou Murphy of Ann Arbor, MI and Carol Lynn of Effort, PA; two grandchildren,
Jason A. of Clinton, NJ and Jennifer A. of Coram, NY; nieces and
nephews.
Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral
Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Albert A. Chaffee, pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, officiated. Burial was in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

LILLIAN WALL
DAMASCUS — Lillian Wall of Damascus, a 70-year
area resident and a former upholsterer, died Sunday, March 5, 2000,
at home. She was 89.
Daughter of the late Nicholas and Maria Tresta
Goetz, she was born May 26, 1910, in New York City. She was the
widow of George Wall.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Eden of
Damascus and Carol Kamens of Newton Falls, OH; a son, Richard of
Hortonville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two
nephews.
Graveside services were held at Callicoon Cemetery
in Callicoon. The Rev. Martha Bonwitt officiated.
CARL WILLIAMS
MONTICELLO — Carl "Dapper Dan" Williams
of Monticello, a retired cook at the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha
Lake, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at home. He was 79.
He was born December 7, 1920, in the West Indies.
Survivors include several area friends.
Services were held at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral
Home in Monticello. The Rev. Willie Smith officiated. Cremation
took place at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.
