Honesdale High presents Rodgers and Hammerstein classic

HONESDALE — On Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25, at 8:00 p.m. each night, Honesdale High School will present its all-school musical, "Carousel," written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.

"Carousel" has become an American musical classic ever since it opened in New York’s Majestic Theatre on April 19, 1945. The story of Billy Bigelow, the carnival barker, and Julie Jordan, the innocent mill worker, who are surrounded by everyday joys and woes of the inhabitants of a late 19th century New England fishing village is as relevant today as it was in the mid-1940’s

Mark Lawrence and Leslie Clearwater will portray Billie and Julie. Kady Rickard and James Hamill represent the contrast and comic relief as Carrie Pipperidge and Enoch Snow. Zac Stuart-Pontier as the wily lowlife, Jigger Craigin, serves to draw Billy away from the path of good and leads the male chorus in a rousing, seafaring number, "Blow High, Blow Low." Judy McCloskey is the passionate carousel owner, Mrs. Mullin, who is also in love with Billy. As Nettie Fowler, Amanda Allbee is the calming influence for Julie and the energy behind the rousing chorus numbers. In the climactic final scenes, Michael Box as the Starkeeper, Cole Ranze as the Heavenly Friend, and Ashley Baumgarten as Louise Bigelow provide the incentive that Billy needs to right the wrong he has done in life as he is led to his heavenly home at the final curtain.

Also featured in the cast are Phil Cohen, Jeff Olver, Ted Robinson, Justin Taraschuk, Ian Pugh, Josh Craft, Ashley Brill, Christie Fairchild, Erin Gill, Melissa Homer, Amanda Leet, Emily McDonough, Jessica Pucci, Nicole Schwab, Flo Simons, Jamilyn Taraschuk, Alanna Ulrich and Martina Wormuth.

The production is being directed by Priscilla Tagle with musical direction by Robert and Linda Mains, set design by Muriel Kielar, set construction by Warren Heinly, and lighting design by Jerome Kielar.

Tickets are available from cast members, the Honesdale High School office, the Wayne Highlands Middle School office, or at the door the evenings of the performance.
