BETHEL — The standing-room-only crowd, who gathered at the Bethel
Justice Court to hear about Alan Gerry’s plans for the Woodstock
site, began leaving half-way through the meeting when it became
clear that nothing new would be announced.
GF Entertainment appeared at a public hearing before the Town of
Bethel Planning Board on March 14 regarding their application for
a permanent special use permit to operate an outdoor recreational
activities venue on the site of the original Woodstock concert.
Most recently, the famous Hurd Road plot of land has served as the
location for GF Entertainment’s successful Day in the Garden concert
series.
"This is not about changing what was done in the past,"
Larry Wolinski, GF’s chief counsel, told the assembled citizenry.
"Planning board approval [of this permit] lends permanency
to the site."
But what does GF have in mind for the site?
The answers on that were not forthcoming. Wolinski explained that
making plans before they had obtained the proper permits would be
inappropriate.
As it stands now, the permit would allow GF to hold events much
like those of the past two summers. A total of thirty event days
is allowable, but it is only expected that fifteen of those days
would ever be used during one season. The maximum number of people
ever expected at an event is 30,000. Numbers between 5,000 and 15,000
would be much more common, Wolinski said.
A final decision on the permit application was not made at the
meeting. Further review of the submitted environmental-review documents
is ongoing. The planning board has sixty-two days to make their
final decision.
