Fire lane no-parking at MacKenzie will be enforced
GLEN SPEY — After other methods were unsuccessful, police will
now begin enforcing the no-parking restrictions for the fire lane
at MacKenzie Elementary School, Lumberland Constable Kirk Meehan
said last week.
Meehan said the lane, marked on the schools traffic circle, has
regularly been used for illegal parking even when parking areas
are empty.
Meehan said there have been earlier warnings. "The school
has sent out letters, but that hasn’t worked. So now we’ve been
in touch with the Sheriff’s Department and the troopers and it will
be enforced," he said.

The segment is scheduled to air on March 18.
Casino opponents suit dismissed
ALBANY — Two lawsuits opposing the St. Regis Mohawks efforts to
build a gambling casino at Monticello Raceway were dismissed on
a technicality in State Supreme Court last week.
Justice Joseph Teresi dismissed suits filed by the Sartatoga Chamber
of Commerce and the New York Institute for Law and Society, for
failing to name the Mohawks in the action. They named only Governor
George Pataki.
The decision seems a final one though, as the Indian tribe may
not be sued in state court and the state may not be sued in federal
court.

from his alleged involvement in providing a narcotic painkiller
to Jamie Romich of Honesdale. Romich allegedly obtained the painkiller
Darvocet from Glinsky’s Drug Store following surgery in 1996 and
continued to receive the painkillers for nearly two years. Romich
committed suicide in April of 1998. Glinsky has been released on
his own recognizance and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing
next week.
Gilman legislation to immediately address fuel crisis
WASHINGTON DC— Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman
(20th
District-NY) had introduced a "Sense of Congress" resolution
calling on the President of the United States and the Secretary
of Energy to immediately draw down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve
(SPR) in order to lower fuel prices in the northeast.
Rep. Gilman anticipates that Congress would begin action on his
bill earlier this week. Companion legislation has been introduced
in the Senate by Charles Grassley of Iowa.
According to Gilman, the SPR was authorized in 1975 following the
fuel shocks of the early and mid 1970s in order to address the type
of crisis we are now experiencing. "The Administration’s reticence
to use this resource at this time is inexplicable," said Rep.
Gilman.
