Please take the opportunity this year to shop local. We have so many amazing small businesses here in the Upper Delaware Valley that need your support. One hand washes the other. By putting your hard-earned money into the local economy, it is returned to the community. According to an infographic by CustomMade, spending $100 at an independent business generates $68 in local economic activity, as opposed to $48 from a big-box retailer. Money spent at a local business generates 3.5 times more wealth for the local economy than money spent at a chain-owned business. Shopping local also has a big impact on the environment. The U.S. uses 11 billion gallons of fuel per year when it transports and ships products internationally.
OK, enough with the depressing news.
One of the many places you can shop local is at The Velvet Maple in Honesdale, PA. The lifestyle shop curated by Alessandra Iavarone offers clothing, accessories, furniture and more. Alessandra took some photos of gift ideas from her shop. Check them out.
