We all scream for ice cream; Where to get the best scoops in the Upper Delaware

REGION — As summer approaches in the beautiful Upper Delaware River Valley, ice cream shops open their doors and welcome tourists and locals alike to cool off and enjoy this summertime favorite (or all-year-round favorite, no one’s judging). Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, I’ve rounded up some of the best options and outlined them below.

For an old-fashioned ice cream parlor: Riverside Creamery

5 Water St., Port Jervis, NY

845/856-8560

Walk inside the Riverside Creamery and you’ll be transported back in time. The restored 1950s ice cream parlor features a vintage soda fountain and offers a wide array of soft and hard ice cream (Perry’s), brownie and waffle sundaes, shakes, food, and fudge. And don’t forget to try the deep-fried ice cream. Their food includes classic fast food options like hot dogs, chicken tenders, personal pizza and panini. The charming building overlooks the Delaware River and there is outdoor seating available.

For gourmet hard ice cream in interesting flavors: Sticky Fingers Ice Cream

10 Horseshoe Lake Rd., Kauneonga Lake, NY

845/423-1056

Nestled in Kauneonga Lake’s famed Restaurant Row, this small ice cream shop offers a large outdoor seating area with a covered space. Sticky Fingers serves Jane’s Ice Cream out of Kingston, NY, with flavors like salty caramel pretzel and apricot orange blossom. The ice cream is incredibly creamy and flavorful and uses fresh and local (to the Hudson Valley) ingredients. The outdoor seating area overlooks a small waterfall and creek, and is nestled nicely among the hustle and bustle of the neighboring restaurants. It also has a small playground for the kids.

For food, too: Callicoon Creamery

4623 State Rte. 17B, Callicoon, NY

845/887-4480

In addition to 25 flavors of Perry’s hard ice cream, Callicoon Creamery offers a delicious menu of food. The wide array includes hot dogs, the famous veggie panini, wraps, sandwiches and more. There are also daily specials, so you’re always in for a treat. They also offer soft ice cream and no-sugar, no-fat frozen yogurt. There is a walk-up window and outdoor seating only: a lovely deck with big umbrellas overlooking Callicoon Creek, making it the perfect spot to enjoy on a sunny day.

For frozen custard: Nora’s Luvin’ Spoonful

141 Kirks Rd., Narrowsburg, NY

845/252-3891

Nora’s offers soft-serve frozen custard in chocolate and vanilla. What’s the difference between ice cream and frozen custard? Although similar to ice cream, frozen custard is made with egg yolks in addition to cream and sugar. The yolk imparts a thick and creamy texture to this frozen treat, and you’ll be in for a sweet surprise. Nora’s also offers food, such as hamburgers and hand-cut fries (try them!). There is outdoor seating only, and the seating area is large and covered.

For ice cream and community: The Corner

577 Rte. 55, Suite #1, Eldred, NY

845/557-3321

The Corner is an ice cream shoppe, grill and liquor store. It serves Perry’s hard ice cream as well as food ranging from sandwiches to wings. The shop also includes beer, soda, chips and camp firewood. In addition to the yummy offerings, there are also community gatherings and events held there, like a Zumba class or a visit from the Easter bunny for kids. The Corner is always finding ways to support and be involved in the community.

For go-karts: Carousel Water and Fun Park

1018 Beach Lake Hwy., Beach Lake, PA

570/729-7532

If you want some excitement with your milkshake, Carousel Park is the place for you. Inside, the ice cream shop offers soft ice cream as well as food options, like popcorn chicken and onion rings, and an arcade. Outside there is a multitude of fun. The park features water slides, bumper boats, go-karts and mini-golf. It’s the perfect place for the whole family to spend a day, or if you just want some ice cream after dinner, that’s good, too.

For homemade hard ice cream: Wahoo Ice Cream Shop

169 Galilee Rd., Tyler Hill, PA

570/224-6583

Want some vegetables with your ice cream? Then stop by Wahoo, a small trailer on a country back road for amazing home- and local-ingredient-made ice cream, where you’ll also find locally grown seasonal veggies and fruits for sale, including tomatoes, blueberries, sweet corn and more. There are also hanging baskets and plotted plants for sale, and prepared food such as burgers, fries and pizza. But the real star is the hard ice cream from Yatsonsky Farm in classic flavors like mint chocolate chip and butter pecan.

For a dollar cone: Gravity Ice Cream

106 6th St., Honesdale, PA

570/253-0445

Named after the Gravity Railroad, this walk-up window right off of Honesdale’s Main Street offers soft-serve ice cream and is the home of the dollar cone. They also offer Flavorburst flavoring syrups to add to your ice cream and their famous banana splits. Grab a cone and head next door for a game of bowling at Gravity Alley. There is outdoor seating only offering a few benches along the sidewalk to sit in and enjoy your ice cream.
