Healthy hiking in the Upper Delaware River Valley

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER REGION — For the past year, the National Park Service has been mapping trails and working on the creation of the new brochure, “Take A Hike! Trails of the Upper Delaware River Valley,” in order to provide expanded hiking opportunities and information to river region visitors.

“We had been offering the ‘Hiking the Tusten Mountain Trail’ brochure,” said National Park Service (NPS) biologist Jamie Myers. “It was so popular that we wanted to be able to expand on it by gathering information together in one convenient location for other hiking opportunities in the region.”

The brochure features brief descriptions of six trails, directions for finding them and safety tips for hiking. In addition to the trails mentioned in the photos within this story, the Bouchoux Trail (Jensen’s Ledges) in Lordville, NY; the Cobey Pond Trail in Masthope, PA; the Tusten Mountain Trail in Narrowsburg, NY; and the Mongaup River Trail in the Town of Deerpark, NY are also included.

The local project supports a national initiative called the “Let’s Move Campaign,” launched by Michelle Obama as a way to get children, adults and families out and exercising. The campaign promotes physical activity as a means of staying healthy.

“Hiking in the Upper Delaware is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the resource at the same time,” said Myers. “The Department of the Interior is a supporter and sponsor of this campaign so it seemed like a natural fit.” (Visit www.letsmove.gov for more information.)

Copies of the brochure can be obtained at the following locations: NPS information kiosks along the river; Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen, PA; Information Center in Narrowsburg, NY; Park Headquarters in Beach Lake, PA; and NPS offices in Milanville, PA and Barryville, NY. Eventually the brochure will be available at each of the six hiking trail heads.

Hikers can earn a free patch from the NPS by hiking all six trails, filling in a checklist on the brochure and submitting the completed list to Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, 274 River Road, Beach Lake, PA 18405.
