The importance of ethics in government

This is why public trust is so important. Without public understanding and participation, the risk is great that finding solutions to such enormous, life-changing challenges will fall short. The involvement of the whole community from the grassroots up is necessary to achieving a good outcome. Without public trust, community buy-in will suffer; the involvement of new faces at the table with fresh and creative ideas will suffer.

The general direction of the present legislature to build public trust by improving government accountability in all aspects is to be saluted. The new Sullivan County Ethics Law is worth serious discussion not only by legislators, but also by the public.

There will be a public hearing on the matter on May 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the government center.

In a time when the conduct of politicians is held by many to be in poor repute, the Sullivan County legislators are trying to do something to improve the standing of government leaders. We salute their efforts.
