The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide after Anthony D’elia, 46, of Bloomingburg was found hanging in his cell at the County Jail in Monticello Wednesday, June 15, 2011. D’elia was being held on a charge of Criminal Contempt in the first degree. State police arrested him May 28, 2011 in the Town of Mamakating for violating an order of protection.

The Monticello Fire department and Mobile medic responded to the jail and D’elia was pronounced dead. Following an autopsy Wednesday, it was confirmed that D’elia died of asphyxia. Sheriff’s detectives and the New York State Commission of Corrections are continuing the investigation.
