Harry Gorman of the Town of Greenville, NY, a longtime resident of the area, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Juila Ribaudo Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lake Ariel, PA. He was 97.
Harry was born April 26, 1915 in Warsaw, Poland, the son of the late Morris and the late Rachel Maas Gorman.
Harry married his love Charlotte Hookman on January 7, 1939 and they were married for 65 years until her death on September 17, 2004.
He was an inventor and small businessman. He invented a technique to press a phonograph record directly onto a cereal box or on any piece of laminated cardboard or paper.
Some 40 years ago, Harry began to realize that our entrance in the Global Economy and, most especially, opening trade with communist China, was going to lead to the destruction of our economy. As an Independent Conservative he created a website, and a daily e-mail newsletter, “Great-Grandpa Gorman’s TRUTH MACHINE”, as a public service, to alert Americans to the danger of dealing with communists on any level. He wrote that the thousands of Americans who fought, died or were mutilated in Korea and Vietnam fighting communism, were betrayed by both parties in Congress.
He predicted, many years ago, that allowing our factories to move to China and other slave-wage countries would result in massive unemployment, monstrous Federal debt and the worst balance of trade in our history. Harry’s chief concern was for the children of America who were facing a bleak, jobless future because of the stupid, self-serving actions of Congress and their destructive “most favored nation” trade treaties with foreign countries, with whose 60 cents an hour (China) Americans can never compete.
He also wrote that without what he called “Our Prosperity Engine”—product-manufacturing factories—we could never regain the prosperity of the 1950s.
As a former Town Supervisor of Greenville he kept his campaign promise of serving only two terms, because he believed in term limits for any elective office.
Harry was a member of Temple Beth El, Port Jervis.
He is survived by his sons Dr. Arthur A. Gorman and his wife Mary Faas of Hilton Head, SC and Paul J. Gorman of Bethlehem, NH; four grandchildren, Dr. Todd Gorman of Quebec, John Gorman of Washington, DC, Nicholas Gorman of South Lake Tahoe, CA and Jody Marra of Brunswick, ME; seven great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY with Dr. Arthur Gorman officiating.
Harry wrote his own funeral service in English because the traditional service in Hebrew cannot be understood by non-Jews and many Jews, not students of ancient Hebrew Biblical language.
Burial will be at Beth-El Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to charity of the donor’s choice.
