On Wednesday June 22nd, 2016 the Village of Liberty Police Department arrested Jason Barreto, 34 of Liberty NY after an investigation into an allegation of child abuse. Liberty Police received a report that Barreto had struck an 8 year old female several times with a belt causing injury to the child.

Liberty Police immediately began an investigation working in conjuction with the Family Violence Response Team component of the Sullivan County Department of Family Services. The investigation resulted in the arrest of Barreto at his residence in evening hours of June 22nd, 2016.

Barreto was charged with assault in the 2nd degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree, both felonies and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. Barreto was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
