District Attorney Jim Farrell announced on April 14 that Vincent Ryan Jr., 51, of Bloomingburg, was convicted by a jury after a four day trial in Sullivan County Court of the crimes of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Assault in the First Degree, both class B violent felonies, and other charges. The jury deliberated for approximately two and a half hours before rendering their guilty verdicts.

The evidence at trial established that on May 28, 2015, Ryan attempted to kill his mother by intentionally driving his 2005 Chevy Tahoe into his mother’s home in Bloomingburg, NY., while she was inside the home.

Ryan told Investigators with the New York State Police that he began driving his vehicle through the Village of Bloomingburg with the intent to kill members of the Hasidic Jewish faith in order to facilitate an investigation into claims that his mother previously stole money from him.

While in Bloomingburg, he decided to directly target his mother instead. He then drove to his childhood home, observed his mother in the doorway, aimed the rear of the vehicle in her direction, placed his vehicle in four wheel drive and “floored” the accelerator towards his mother and the home. The SUV broke through the exterior wall into the downstairs basement living room pinning her underneath the SUV.

As a result, Ryan’s mother suffered serious physical injury, including lacerations to her head, a fractured sternum, and a compound fracture of her leg which caused a bone to protrude through her skin. She was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for life saving treatment. The jury found Ryan guilty of attempting to kill his mother, assaulting and seriously injuring her and intentionally causing damage to her home in excess of $1,500.

This was not the first time Ryan has been convicted for driving his vehicle into his mother’s house. Two years earlier on, May 28, 2013, Ryan entered a guilty plea to Criminal Mischief stemming from a December 15, 2012, incident where he crashed his car into the same house. Fortunately, no one was in the residence during that first offense, and he received a sentence of probation with an order of protection directing that he stay away from his parents which was in full force and effect on May 28, 2015. The jury also found Ryan guilty of violating that previously issued order of protection.

Based upon the jury’s verdict, the defendant now faces up to twenty-five years in state prison when he is sentenced on July 21, 2016, before the Hon. Frank J. Labuda, Sullivan County Court Judge. “Mrs. Ryan is lucky to be alive and the results here could have been deadly had the defendant succeeded in his attempt to kill her. The SUV he aimed and intentionally drove at her weighed about 2 ½ tons and could certainly have caused her death. I am pleased with the jury’s verdict and believe that these convictions will help ensure that this defendant will never harm his mother, or anyone else again.” Farrell said.
