Arrest in Monticello murder; victim stabbed to death

Monticello Police have made an arrest in the stabbing death of a 33-year-old Monticello man, who was stabbed in from of the West Broadway Villas apartment complex. Yaya M. Robinson, age 28, of Monticello was arrested the day after the stabbing and charged with second degree murder and five related charges.

The victim was Shereem Samuel Burch, age 33, of Monticello. Police responded to a 911 call at about 3:45 am on August 7 and found Burch laying on the ground and unresponsive. He was transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center by Mobile Medic ambulance paramedics, where he was later pronounced dead.

An investigation by Monticello Police and New York State Police on Thursday identified Robinson as a suspect. Robinson was subsequently located in an apartment at the West Broadway Villas apartment complex where, according to police, he was hiding in a closet. Police say Robinson resisted arrest and he officers used a TASER to subdue him and take him into custody.

The suspect was arraigned in the Village of Monticello Justice Court before acting Village of Monticello Justice Leo Glass and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action.

The Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office and Sullivan County Sheriff Deputies also assisted in the investigation, which is ongoing.
