State Police Montgomery arreste man on gun and impersonation charges

Richard DeRosa

May 23, 2014

On May 21, 2014, the State Police in Montgomery in conjunction with the State Police on Long Island, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Orange County District Attorney's Office arrested Richard J DeRosa, age 41, of Bellmore, New York for the felonies of criminal possession of a firearm and criminal impersonation 1st.

The lengthy investigation revealed that sometime in November 2013, DeRosa, utilizing a fake New York State pistol permit, purchased a Smith & Wesson 340 PD .357 revolver in the parking lot of McDonald's on Route 208 in the Town of Montgomery. DeRosa contacted a subject via the internet and setup the purchase of this handgun.

DeRosa inferred that he was a special agent for the federal government and possessed a valid pistol permit in New York. It was later determined that DeRosa was not employed as a federal agent nor did he possess a valid pistol permit in the State of New York. A search warrant was executed at DeRosa's residence in Long Island where several items of evidence were recovered.

DeRosa was arrested and arraigned in the Town of Montgomery Court and remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail to return in court at a later date.
