Monticello Police arrested Anthony Shackelford (43) of Monticello on Saturday 4/19/14. Shackelford was charged with felonies for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 3rd and 5th degrees, assault in the 2nd degree upon a police officer, 2 counts of attempted assault upon a police officer, attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree, tampering with physical evidence and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

At 10:00 AM Saturday Monticello PO John Calvello Jr. stopped a 2006 Jeep Liberty for a vehicle and traffic violation on Hillside Avenue in the Village of Monticello. Shackelford was a passenger in the vehicle along with 2 other persons. While the vehicle occupants were being interviewed, Shackelford was found to be in possession of a plastic zip lock baggie containing crack cocaine. Shakleford then bolted from officers and a foot chase ensued.

Shackelford ran to a swamp behind the Evergreen drive-housing complex and directly into waist deep water. PO Calvello and backup PO Harry Mota pursued Shackelford into the water. Shackelford then intentionally submerged other illegal narcotics that he had on his person into the water while continuing to flee from officers. Shackelford then violently struggled and fought with the officers, grabbing onto both of them and attempting to pull them under the water. Shackelford also grabbed onto PO Calvello’s holstered service weapon during the struggle and again tried to pull the officer under the water.

Officers Calvello and Mota were able to subdue Shackelford and take him into custody. PO Calvello sustained numerous cuts on his hands and arms as a result of the struggle with Shakelford.

The other two occupants of the vehicle, the driver Katie McKnight (22) of Bloomingburg and passenger Robert Mullins (29) of Loch Sheldrake were each charged with 2 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree. Both were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Village of Monticello justice court.

Shackelford was arraigned in the Town of Rockland Justice court and remanded to the Sullivan county jail without bail pending further court action.
