Liberty and Monticello residents arrested for welfare fraud

The Village of Monticello Police, Village of Liberty Police and the Sullivan County Welfare Investigation Unit in a joint inter agency investigation arrested Shelton Spence a.k.a. “Special” (32) of Monticello and Takisha Steele (36) of Liberty on Friday 8/2/13. Both defendants were charged with felonies for grand larceny in the 4th degree, welfare fraud in the 4th degree and 42 counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the 1st degree.

An investigation showed that the defendants while acting in concert with each other did submit 42 false child care vouchers to the Sullivan County Department of Family Services during a period between January 2011 and November of 2011. The total amount fraudulently stolen by the defendants was $1439. Both defendants were arraigned in the Town of Liberty Justice Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $35,000 secured bond.
