Drug dealer boasted on Facebook, two drug dealers sentenced

Alejandro Vela-Garrett boasted about his drug dealing on Facebook.

PRESS RELEASE

Janine Edwards, Wayne County District Attorney, announced the sentencing of Alejandro Vela-Garrett, age 18, and Daniel DiBenedetto, age 24, on drug related charges.

President Judge Raymond L. Hamill sentenced Vela-Garrett to four years to eight years in a State Correctional Institution for one count of Felon Not to Possess a Firearm {F2} and one count of Criminal Conspiracy to Deliver Percocet {F}.

Judge Hamill sentenced DiBenedetto to one year to four years in a State Correctional Institution for one count of Delivery of Heroin {F} and two counts of Possession of Heroin{M}. Both Vela-Garrett and DiBenedetto were arrested as a result of a joint investigation by the Wayne County Drug Task Force and the Pennsylvania State Police Vice Unit.

Vela-Garrett was arrested on March 12, 2013, for conspiracy to sell seven Percocet pills for $210.00. The sale took place in the parking lot of a gas station in Newfoundland.

When arrested at his residence in Newfoundland, Vela-Garrett was found to be in constructive possession of a loaded AR-15 assault rifle, a loaded AK-47 style assault rifle, a loaded Taurus 9 mm pistol, Marijuana, Vicodin pills, a digital scale, a metal grinder, various rounds of ammunition and $1,470.00 in cash.

Vela-Garrett had a prior record in Florida including a juvenile adjudication for Burglary. Vela-Garrett flaunted his drug activities and possession of assault rifles on FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM.

At the Sentencing Hearing the District Attorney submitted several of the photographs into evidence showing Vela-Garrett posing with assault rifles, drugs and cash.

DiBenedetto was arrested on February 15, 2013, related to the sale of 100 bags of Heroin for $700.00 on November 8, 2012, on Terrace Street in Honesdale and the sale of 100 bags of Heroin for $650.00 on December 5, 2012, on Westside Avenue in Honesdale. When DiBenedetto was arrested he was in possession of 12 bags of Heroin and $1,560.00 in cash.

District Attorney Edwards praised the Wayne County Drug Task Force and the Pennsylvania State Police Vice Unit. “The conviction of DiBenedetto is a very big step in combating the scourge of Heroin in our community. His convictions and those of many of his associates puts drug dealers on notice that the law enforcement community in Wayne County will not rest in its pursuit of those that traffic Heroin. As for Vela-Garrett, his selling of prescription drugs mixed with his possession and flaunting of assault rifles is something we will not tolerate. Today was a good day for the war on drugs in Wayne County.”
