Five Sullivan residents arrested for stealing copper pipes

Posted

On Friday April 12, 2013 at approximately 12:00 Noon, a NYSEG employee who was reading electrical meters in the Town of Bethel noticed a suspicious vehicle and suspicious subjects in the vicinity of 561 Harris/Bushville Rd.

The NYSEG employee mentioned the suspicious activity to a next door neighbor who called 911 and reported a burglary in progress. Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the location but the subjects fled prior to the patrol’s arrival.

An investigation at the scene indicated that the suspects did not gain entry to the residence but were able to crawl underneath and use a battery powered sawsall to remove numerous copper pipes. Based on descriptions provided by witnesses, deputies were able to track the vehicle carrying the stolen goods to Sims Recycling on Old 17 in Ferndale.

One of the suspects, Courtney Kashan, 24, of Livingston Manor used her NYS driver’s license as ID when she redeemed the copper. Deputies picked her up on Saturday morning, April 13, 2013, along with Joshua Boyles, 24, at his residence on Dahlia Rd. Two additional suspects, Juan Morales 35 and Jorge Ramirez, 40, were arrested where they are employed as caretakers of the “Last Quarter Horse Ranch” on ST-55 in White Lake.

All four defendants were charged with Felony Criminal Mischief, and the Misdemeanors of Criminal Trespass, Conspiracy, and Petit Larceny. They were arraigned by Judge Kevin Rhyne in the Town of Bethel Justice Court and sent to the Sullivan County jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether the four suspects are linked to any other recent thefts in the area.
