On Wednesday August 15, 2012 at approximately 6:30 PM, Ann VanEtten discovered her husband trapped under his 2005 Subaru Legacy in their garage on VanEtten Rd. in Monticello. Robert VanEtten Jr, 54, was working on the car’s C/V joint when the jack collapsed with the undercarriage pinning his chest. Ann dialed 911.

Within moments Justin Mapes, a Monticello Firefighter who lives nearby heard the call on his pager and ran to the VanEttens’ residence. Right behind him was Jared Kaufman who is also a neighbor. Kaufman had gotten a call about the incident from a friend of his who is a state trooper and knows he lives nearby.

Within a few seconds Sgt. Ed Clouse and Deputy Blake Starner of the Sheriff’s Patrol also arrived at the scene. Together the four men lifted the vehicle and pulled Robert VanEtten Jr. from underneath. VanEtten was not breathing. Deputy Starner immediately started CPR. A short time later The Monticello Fire Department arrived followed by Mobil Medic.

CPR was turned over to Firefighter Wayne VanDerMulen, who was then assisted by paramedics Joseph Gallagher and Melissa Vanloon. VanEtten was transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center where he was stabilized and transferred to Westchester Medical Center. He is alive but remains in serious condition. Sheriff Mike Schiff praised the determination of those who responded to this accident. “The teamwork by the responders was incredible”, said the Sheriff.
