Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell announced today that Kevin Devault, 53, of Hurleyville, N.Y. was sentenced to a total of 25 years in state prison and 20 years of post release supervision for his convictions for Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the 1st and 2nd Degrees and Rape in the 2nd Degree, all violent felonies.

According to Farrell, Devault admitted to sexually abusing a child between 2000 and 2008 in Sullivan County. Devault was arrested by the New York State Police on November 24, 2010, after an investigation into the sexual abuse.

“This sentence underscores our commitment to those people who have suffered sexual abuse. We are here to protect you and to make sure that the person responsible is held accountable and responsible for their criminal acts. It is a very hard thing for some victims of this abuse to come forward, fearing they will not be believed or that nothing will be done and I want to reassure those victims that the police and my office are committed to making sure that these cases are given a complete and fair investigation and that at the conclusion of the process justice is served.”, Farrell said.

In his sentencing argument to the court, Farrell highlighted Devault’s lengthy previous criminal record of indecent exposure and public lewdness arrests and convictions in various states and jurisdictions in 1978, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2010.

Devault was also previously convicted of simple assault in Maine in 1991 which was sexually motivated when he entered the dorm room of a college student who was undressing and assaulted her. “This defendant and his documented history of sexual deviance presented a clear and present danger to the community and the 25 year state prison sentence will ensure that he cannot harm another innocent person again”, Farrell said.
