Two arrested in Rock Hill burglary

The Sheriff's Office, in its continuing efforts to address the epidemic of burglaries in Sullivan County, made another arrest on Tuesday morning in Rock Hill.

At about 11:00 AM, Sullivan County 911 received a report of two suspicious persons in a tan Chevrolet Tahoe in the vicinity of 334 Rock Hill Drive in the Town of Thompson.

The subjects had knocked on the door at that location and startled the home owner. Deputies responded to the scene only to find that the perpetrators had gone to the residence next door at 326 Rock Hill Drive, broke in, took a flat screen TV and other property and fled.

A description of the suspects and their vehicle was broadcast over the County Wide Police frequency. A short time later, a Deputy with the Sheriff's Civil Division, who was in Rock Hill serving court papers, spotted the vehicle. The Deputy followed the suspects until they pulled into a driveway at 394 Lake Louise Marie Road.

The Deputy called for back up and units responded from the Sheriff's Patrol and State Police. The investigation at the scene revealed that the suspects knew they were being followed and picked the driveway radomly to pull into. They initially claimed to know the owner of the residence, and even borrowed a cordless phone from the occupant to make a call, but their story fell apart upon questioning by detectives.

Arrested were Vincent D. Lacks, 24, of Ellenville and Peter B. Jennings, 47, of Allendale, NJ. Sheriff's Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect's vehicle and recovered property taken from the Rock Hill Drive location. Both men were charged with Burglary 2nd, attempted Burglary, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. They were arraigned before Thompson Town Justice Perry Meltzer and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

"We continue to tell people, if you see something, say something", said Sheriff Mike Schiff. "Once again a concerned citizen on the lookout called in some suspicious activity and we were able to make an arrest".
