On Monday March 12, 2012 at about 3:04 PM, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a one car accident on State Route 17 in the Town of Thompson.
The investigation at the scene revealed that a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Michael Messineo, age 58, of Liberty NY was travelling eastbound when it drifted across the center median, across the westbound lanes, struck a guide rail and then plunged down an embankment.
The vehicle rolled several times crushing the roof. The Monticello Fire Department and Mobile Medic responded. A passenger in the front seat, Charles Wolff, 73, of Liberty NY was pronounced dead by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten.
The driver, Michael Messineo, was extricated and taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Messineo was charged with Manslaughter, DWI and failure to keep right. He was arranged before Town of Thompson Judge Martin Miller and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Messineo’s next appearance in court is scheduled for March 15th at 10:30 AM. The State Police, NYS DOT and the District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
