Guilty Plea in 2008 Sullivan Drug Conspiracy

Posted

District Attorney Jim Farrell announced on January 20 that Adam Bloom, age 29, of Monticello entered guilty pleas to multiple counts of an indictment that charged him with conspiracy to distribute large amounts of cocaine in Sullivan County in the Spring of 2008. Bloom had been arrested in May of 2008 after a long term investigation into his drug dealing by the New York State Police, Monticello Police , Liberty Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office.

Police and prosecutors used a wiretap to gather evidence and take down the large scale cocaine conspiracy ring, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of over twenty-five individuals. Farrell said Bloom had previously pled guilty in December of 2008 and had received a sentence of 36 years in state prison but that plea and sentence was thrown out by the Appellate Division Third Department in May of 2011 because they found the plea was not properly taken by County Judge Frank LaBuda who failed to advise Bloom of a period of post release supervision he would serve after his prison sentence was completed.

Bloom’s original plea agreement called for a 12 year prison sentence with cooperation against the other conspirators but he failed to cooperate and the sentence was increased as a result. LaBuda recused himself from the case after it was returned to Sullivan County Court after being asked by Bloom’s attorney.

Proceeding before County Judge Michael McGuire, Bloom entered guilty pleas to Conspiracy in the Second Degree, a class B felony, six counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 1st Degree, class A-1 felonies, and Money Laundering in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony. Bloom admitted to conspiring with eleven other individuals to distribute large quantities of cocaine in Sullivan County.

He also admitted on six different occasions to the possession of more than 8 ounces of cocaine in furtherance of his drug distribution ring and to laundering $7,500 in cash, proceeds of his illegal narcotics operation. Under the terms of the plea agreement Bloom is expected to receive an aggregate sentence of 19 years in state prison with 5 years of post release supervision. Bloom also agreed to forfeit nearly $5,000.00 in cash and a Breitling watch, all proceeds of his drug dealing, to the District Attorney. Sentencing was adjourned to April 13, 2012.

Farrell praised the work of the local police agencies who participated in the investigation and prosecution, “The dismantling of this large scale cocaine ring was only accomplished through the hard work of the police officers, detectives and investigators who participated in this investigation, working day and night to rid our community of large amounts of cocaine and those who sell and distribute it. We will continue to pursue those who engage in this type of criminal behavior that has so many negative and devastating consequences to our youth, our families and our communities.”
