New director for Bethany Public Library

BETHANY, PA — Bethany Public Library has welcomed a new director. Erin Carpenter of Lakeville holds a graduate degree in library science and worked in libraries in New York State for seven years. She and her family have lived in Pennsylvania for the last five years. Finding her dream job at the Bethany Library is like “finding a home,” she said.

Carpenter already has weeded through the 6,000-item collection to update the library’s catalog and has begun ordering new books and DVDs.” I’ve been asking every patron who comes in what they want to see in our collection,” she said.

She is also proud to highlight the library’s antique and historic books that tell the early story of Wayne County. (Bethany once served as the county seat, before being moved to Honesdale.) “We have an exceptional amount of historic literature about the area,” she reported, adding that she will help patrons who want to do research on local history.

The library offers Wi-Fi and has five public computers, including a computer just for children in its children’s room. Carpenter indicated she will gladly help patrons who want to learn to use a computer. “They can come here to do their emailing,” she added. She is also ready to assist with letter and resume writing.

Carpenter expressed excitement about the new inter-county library loan system in which Wayne and Pike counties share their catalogs with each other.

Countywide, the Wayne Library Alliance is getting ready to launch its annual appeal. “Donations are what keep a library alive,” Carpenter said. She reported how thrilled she has been at the local community’s support and participation in fundraising events. A recent auction, organized by the Bethany Collective, raised funds not only to restore the borough park’s band shell, but also for other community causes including the library.

In addition, the library is already planning its annual holiday wreath sale and second annual Holiday Shop Around at the Honesdale United Methodist Church on 11th Street. Check the Bethany Public Library Facebook page for dates, times and all the specifics.

The Wayne County Libraries annual appeal letters will be mailed in mid-October. “I hope all of our community will help support the Bethany Public Library and consider making a donation,” Carpenter said.
