LOOKOUT, PA — The old Civil War era Joel Hill Saw Mill will rumble to life again on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for another season of tours and sawing demonstrations. The event is free, the labor provided by a dedicated group of volunteers who run the old mill.
The mill, in almost continuous operation since the 1800’s, is powered solely by the force of the water from the mill pond, which is fed from Duck Harbor Pond. Water flows down a sluice pipe to a large turbine below the mill. Through a complicated arrangement of belts and pulleys, power surges up to the mill floor and operates the huge saw blade, producing boards from raw logs. Things were built to last in those good old days.
Volunteers have worked hard all spring to create a new platform from which the waterfall can be viewed. It will soon be ready to welcome visitors.
The mill is the property of the Equinunk Historical Society. New saw mill crew volunteers are always welcome to participate in this historic and educational activity. Call 570/224-6722 for information and directions.
