Children can learn to play the pennywhistle

REGION — Don Castellow will teach a pennywhistle workshop for beginners this summer for ages nine to 12 at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) in Narrowsburg, NY and at the Delaware Youth Center (DYC) in Callicoon NY.

The pennywhistle is a member of the flute family and is a fun and easy instrument to learn. No previous experience or musical training is required. During the workshop, students will learn to read music and play tunes on the pennywhistle.

The workshop at DVAA at 37 Main St., runs for six weeks from July 9 to August 15, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuition for 12 classes costs $120 and includes a new pennywhistle and all materials. The workshop at the DYC runs for five weeks from July 16 to August 15, Wednesdays and Fridays, 1 to 2 p.m. Tuition for 10 classes costs $100 and includes a new pennywhistle and all materials.

Parents are invited to join their children in the workshop for free, and they may purchase a pennywhistle and workshop materials for $10. Castellow has taught instrumental music in New York City public schools for 13 years. In 2014 he taught pennywhistle classes in the Delaware River Valley at Damascus and Preston Area Schools.
