Here is an early picture of the Hawk’s Nest. Route 97 was built in random sections and the 70-mile road was not completed until 1939. The Hawk’s Nest was the first section to be constructed, during the 1920s, and was among the hardest and most dangerous to build. A car of that era can be seen on the road to the left.
