Pike County EDA to present plans to stimulate economy

HAWLEY, PA — In an effort to address unemployment, elevate the local wage scale, promote economic growth and achieve a full recovery from the 2008-09 recession, Pike County is planning to do something about these issues. At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18 at Ehrhardt’s Restaurant at 205 Rte. 507 on Lake Wallenpaupack, the Pike County Economic Development Authority (EDA) will unveil a program designed to stimulate activity in several sectors of the Pike County economy.

Pike County Commissioner Matt Osterberg said, “We have had two historic occupations here in Pike: home building and tourism. Both have been hurt badly in recent years.” According to Osterberg, “In 2004, we issued 1,211 building permits to keep our home-builders busy; in the first 11 months of 2013 we issued only 68 permits.” EDA Executive Director Michael Sullivan added that, “currently the average weekly wage in the U.S. is $989; in Pike County it is only $599 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

The presentation plans to address opportunities to improve the wage base and celebrate the progress made in Pike County in 2013. Reservations are required to attend this dinner. The cost is $23 per person. Call Tammy at 570/296-7332.
