The Liberty Wedge was a musical group formed to raise money in Wayne County for Liberty Bonds. Wayne County played an active part in World War I, beginning with the local Company E of the 13th Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard. On the regiment’s way home from Texas, where they had been stationed to prevent Pancho Villa from raiding across the border, Congress declared war on Germany. On the morning of September 10, 1917, Company E, led by local dignitaries and the Jenkins Band, marched through Honesdale to the waiting train. After additional training in Georgia, the regiment sailed for France on May 3, 1918. More volunteers and draftees soon swelled the ranks of Wayne County men—totaling 661 by November 11, 1918, when the ringing of church bells heralded the Armistice. Wayne County welcomed her soldiers home with a “Soldiers and Sailors Homecoming” from August 4 to 6, 1919, and commemorated 53 war deaths by establishing Wayne Memorial Hospital.

From the collection of the Wayne County Historical Society, 810 Main St., Honesdale. The museum and research library are open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. and museum only 12 noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.
