Pike celebrates two centuries

Pike County, PA is celebrating its 200th year and the Pike County Historical Society (PCHS), in cooperation with the county commissioners, is hosting a celebratory banquet at Woodloch Pines Resort in Hawley, PA on March 26 to mark the milestone.

The event will feature several speakers including Pike County Historian George Fluhr, offering a retrospective of the county; Jim Levell, discussing illustrator Dan Beard, who founded the Dan Beard Outdoor School for Boys on what is now Woodloch’s property; state Rep. Rosemary Brown, paying tribute to Pike’s veterans; state Rep. Mike Peifer offering opening remarks; and Sen. Lisa Baker providing a closing address for the evening.

I will also speak at the event and invite “River Talk” readers to join me in an exploration of Pike County’s abundant, restorative and beautiful natural resources. We’ll take a look at the flora and fauna encountered here as we ponder the role that humans play in coexisting with other life forms making their homes in this special place. What actions might we take to nurture Pike County’s natural bounty for the next 200 years?

The entertaining and informative evening will be emceed by Channel 13 anchorman George Roberts and music will be provided by The Dixins, who are Terri Dixon on vocals, Jane Mangini, (who tours with the Trans Siberian Orchestra) on keyboards and Sandy Bookey on drums.

Tickets cost $50 and can be obtained by calling PCHS at 570/296-8126 or emailing pikemuse@ptd.net by the deadline of March 21.

In other environmental initiatives, PCHS will co-host the Zane Grey Catch-and-Release Fishing Derby from April 12 to July 6. PCHS will partner with the National Park Service (NPS) and Zane Grey’s West Society in providing commemorative rulers to measure and photograph fish caught in the Delaware and its tributaries. Winners in several categories will be awarded prizes at Zane Grey Days on July 12 at the Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen, PA. The rulers will be available at local sporting goods outfitters and tackle shops, through fishing guides and liveries, at the Columns Museum in Milford and through the NPS.
