Contests for fans of state lands

Experiencing the natural world through the eye of a camera lens is a satisfying activity that comes with plentiful rewards. For shutterbugs who enjoy spending time photographing on Pennsylvania public lands, two upcoming photo contests might be of interest.

The PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR) Wild Resource Conservation Program is conducting its first ever “Keystone Wild!Notes Photo Contest” as part of a year-long public lands theme. Entries are due October 31 and should focus on visits to state parks, state forests and state game lands in the categories of non-game wildlife, wild plants and scenic landscapes.

Awards will be given to the top three entries in each category for both students (K-12) and adults. Winners will receive a selection of books available through the Wild Resource Conservation Program and their photo will be published in the winter 2013 issue of “Keystone Wild!Notes.”

Visit www.dcnr.state.pa.us/conservation science/wrcp/photocontest/index.htm for full details.

In addition, the PA Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) has launched its 2013 “Through the Seasons Photo Contest,” with a deadline of September 5 for submissions. Photos should pertain to the categories Appreciation of Beauty, Kids in the Outdoors, Outdoor Recreation, Volunteers in Action and Dogs in the Outdoors.

Top prizes include the PPFF Passport and state park gift cards. All photos must be taken in a Pennsylvania state park or state forest, and submitted in JPEG form to ppffnewsletter@pa.net.

Best-in-show winners will be printed on the cover of PPFF’s fall newsletter with the top three in each category featured on the PPFF website, Facebook page and other electronic communications.

Visit www.paparksandforests.org/photo_contests.html for full details.
