New Year’s resolutions

January 2, 2013

My son asked me what my New Year’s resolutions were. I told him I don’t make them anymore but I have some to offer the rest of you….

  • Stop assuming the worst of your fellow human beings. Maybe they are just deaf to your needs. Tell them what you want and ask how you can help them.
  • Speak softer, but clearly. Make eye contact.
  • Don’t forget to ask, no, really ask, how their day/week/life is going before ranting about your own. Don’t rant. Okay, maybe a little. Sometimes.
  • Stop watching Fox News.
  • Watch less MSNBC.
  • Read the newspaper.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text and drive. Just drive.
  • Take care of your family.
  • Buy local; eat your vegetables.
  • Buy some art. Make some art.
  • Go for a walk every day. Take someone with you.
  • Play with your dog/cat/child. If you don’t have a dog/cat/child to play with, borrow or adopt one.
  • Go outside at night just to look at the stars.
  • Go to the library. Find out what kinds of books you like to read and read lots of them before next year. Not everyone likes fiction. It’s okay. Cookbooks are books. Some of them are very well written. There are books about everything. And they are free at the library.
  • Call your mother/father/brother/sister/uncle/aunt just to say hello.
  • Keep in touch with your friends.
  • If you love someone, and I hope you do, tell them.
  • Only say “I love you” if you do.
  • Volunteer in moderation. Better to do one thing well.
  • Practice. You’ll get better, I promise.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Clean up one of the messes in your life. It will make the others seem easier to approach.
  • Take down your Christmas tree before Lent. Or sooner.
  • Put on some music and dance in your living-room when no one else is around.
  • Pay your bills on time. If you can’t pay your bills, ask your creditors for help. Don’t ignore them; they won’t go away.
  • Not everyone is worth your attention. Do not suffer fools.
  • If the plumber/electrician/mechanic doesn’t call you back, find another plumber/electrician/mechanic. Don’t let other people waste your time. It’s your life.
  • When something breaks, fix it. If it can’t be fixed, don’t store it in the garage. Throw it away.
  • Behave as if the world depended on you.
  • Don’t overestimate your importance.
  • Recycle. Floss.
  • Listen to your friends.
  • Meet deadlines.

Have a Happy New Year!
