My husband Tommy had a big birthday coming and I did not know what to get the man who has everything (including the best wife ever). When Tommy was 20 and in Vietnam, he said he should have zigged when he zagged, and he stepped on a land mine. He was awarded a Purple Heart. With the 4th of July just passing, it got me to thinking about war and all who fought to keep us free. Tommy was the first person I thought of, and that is when it came to me—you have to get Tommy registered in the Purple Heart Hall of Honor. So we took a little mini vacation, and down to New Windsor, NY we went.

He is now a registered Purple Heart recipient 45 years later. I was so proud of him when they handed him his certificate. Afterward, we took a ride to West Point to ask some questions about pensions now that he is 65. The only thing we found out is that the Army had him walking around for 40 years with the wrong ID card. He is now a properly retired disabled vet with the right ID card.

On Saturday, July 13, Cochecton Day on the Lake and the Lake Huntington Fire Company parade, car show and chicken barbeque went well. It would have been better if the rain had stayed away, but there was a nice breeze. (Last year it was so hot the sweat was dripping into your eyes.)

Little kids do not care if it rains, and so they had a ball in the bounce house. Love the snow cones. I was partial to the chicken and beef on a stick from Tony’s on the Lake and, yes, his watermelon. That does not mean that we did not eat hot dogs and burgers from the other vendors; we did.

When we left for the day, we had chicken barbeque, and it was really good. You would think that I would eat anything, but I am a very picky eater, and this chicken was the best I’d had in a long time. The president of the Cochecton Ambulance, Mike, would like to thank everyone who stopped by their booth and made a donation. (He is such a nice guy.) The Democrats and Republicans each had a booth, along with lots of vendors.

Lake Huntington Automotive Services (and Small Engines) had his lawn mowers, snow blowers and generators set up; United Plumbing and Heating was there selling fireplaces; K.C. Garn and his wife, Gloria, entertained us with their great singing. The Lake Huntington Fire Company and the members of the Cochecton Day committee would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting our community.

I enjoyed a nice four days off from work, and we ended our weekend at Pennsyltucky Grill in Honesdale, PA. If you have never been, you should go. Gale the owner is a very funny and nice person, and we always have a great time, and the food is yummy.

My buddy Dolores Manaseri and her husband Joe are home from Florida. Do you think they brought all this hot weather back with them?

Have a great week and email leeniebeans@citlink.net, or call 845/252-3568, if you have news.
