Legislature revises tourism plan

“The resolution came about because the legislators heard the public and they wanted to respond.” That was how lawmaker Ira Steingart, chair of the Community and Economic Development Committee introduced a resolution dealing with the Sullivan County Visitors Association (SVCA) on February 2. The resolution supersedes another resolution passed the previous week, which called for immediately issuing a request for proposals (RFP) from interested nonprofit organizations to promote tourism in the county.  Read more

Stolen Torah recovered

A valuable Torah stolen in December from the Landfield Avenue Synagogue has been recovered. Police arrested Christopher Colvill, 41, of Woodridge, on Tuesday, January 24 morning and charged him with criminal possession of stolen property. They recovered the scroll, valued at $35,000, from his house.  Read more

New process for tourism dollars; critics call it a political payoff

The newly-seated Sullivan County Legislature on January 26 voted to change the way it awards about $700,000 in room-tax revenue to promote tourism in the county. For the past 12 years, the legislature has negotiated with and awarded a yearly contract to the Sullivan County Visitors Association (SCVA).  Read more
