With Sullivan County Legisl ators keeping a careful eye these days, Ed McAndrew thought that they should consider a county policy of since the late 1990s of allowing farmers to walk away with newsprint to be used for bedding for cattle or cows.
McAndrew, deputy commissioner of the Division of Public Works, said he did not have an exact figure about how much newsprint the farmers were taking, but he estimated “it’s in the neighborhood of 200 tons per year, and you’re looking at about $20,000 a year of newsprint that isn’t being marketed.” Read more
District Attorney Jim Farrell announced that two men, David Guisewhite, 25, of Elmira, N.Y. and Jose Brigannti, 21, of Bronx, N.Y. were sentenced in Sullivan County Court to state prison terms for the possession of over 4 ounces of cocaine after a traffic stop on State Route 17 in the Town of Rockland on May 12, 2012. Larry Richardson said his views on gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing have evolved over the years. He’s now convinced that the best way to protect the town against the possible harms of drilling is to follow the lead of four other Sullivan County towns, and adopt a ban on gas drilling. Read more
The Sullivan County Legislature voted four to one in committee to revise the county charter to change the provision that requires a supermajority—or six of the nine legislators—to appoint a person to or remove him or her from the position of county manager.
In introducing it, legislator Alan Sorensen said, “This resolution will restore the original intent of the Sullivan County Charter bringing it back to a simple majority.” Read more
The Sheriff’s Office has made another arrest in its ongoing investigation of drug trafficking in Sullivan County. On Thursday January 10, 2013 at approximately 2:45 PM, Deputy Jessie Cramer spotted a White Ford Windstar minivan near the intersection of Anawana Lake Road and State Route 42 in the Town of Thompson. The Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County will sponsor a Story Time from 11am to 12pm on the first Saturday of the month at the Read It Again Bookstore. All children must be accompanied by an adult, who will remain with them throughout the hour. Stories will be read to the children, and an activity will follow, time permitting.
