Monticello police arrested Luis Soto Montanez (55) of Monticello on Thursday 4/4/13. Montanez was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree and misdemeanors for reckless endangerment in the 2nd degree, menacing in the 2nd degree and obstructing breathing and circulation. The lean times continue in Sullivan County as the legislature voted on March 21 to cut the amount of money it gives to the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County (CCE) by 20% or roughly $83,000. Before the vote, members of the CCE board addressed county legislators in an attempt to persuade them not to approve the cut. Read more
Two Monticello men, Lance Tate Jr., 19, and Johnny B. Davis, Jr., 22, who is a reputed member of the Bloods street gang, were sentenced on March 28 to significant prison terms for participation in a violent robbery, during which they stole a lawfully possessed handgun from its registered owner. Ivan Martinez, 45, has been arrested for welfare fraud and other charges including grand larceny and misuse of food stamps. The charges, which were brought on March 29, come as the result of a joint investigation by the Sullivan County Department of Social Services Fraud Unit and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. In a move that lawmaker Cindy Gieger has been pursuing for some time, a press conference was held at the government center on April 2 to announce the appointment of detective Gerald Dietz to the position of chief fraud investigator serving the Sullivan County Division of Family Services. There was also the announcement of the formation of Sullivan County’s first fraud investigation team, which includes not only Dietz, but all branches of law enforcement in the county. Read more

The New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit on March 21 in federal court against the recently passed gun law in New York State. Court papers say the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (NY SAFE), runs afoul of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which affords citizens the right to own “commonly possessed” guns for defense purposes.
On the same day, hundreds of people gathered for a rally against NY SAFE, which is primarily aimed at the sale of assault weapons. Read more
