Sullivan West Board of Education asked to reconsider sale of Narrowsburg School

No sooner had the Sullivan West School District Board of Education convened its July 10 reorganization meeting, sworn in its newly elected and re-elected members (Mary Scheutzow, Kathleen Meckle and Trevor Peachey), elected and sworn in a president and vice president (Scheutzow and Rose Joyce-Turner, respectively) than it was confronted by over 100 representatives of the newly-formed Narrowsburg Organization for Responsible School Use (NORSU).  Read more

Cochecton election may turn on second home owners; court to rule on challenged voters

The votes of second home-owners did not make much of an impact in most of the towns in western Sullivan County, and in fact the issue may have sparked a backlash among voters in some towns. But in the Town of Cochecton, the race for one of the council member’s seats may be decided by a court because of second home owners.  Read more

Four success stories and one work in progress at Sullivan West

There were five presentations to the Sullivan West Board of Education at its November 14 meeting. Four described successful projects. The fifth described a work in progress, so far unsuccessful. But the night really belonged to the success stories: the peer tutoring lab; the pre-K program; the elementary school roof replacement; and the Sullivan West Enrollment/Facilities Study (reviewed at the public forum immediately preceding the board meeting).  Read more

Cochecton signs climate pledge

The Cochecton Town Board voted unanimously at its November 13 monthly meeting to adopt the newly amended Climate Smart Community Pledge provided by Sullivan County. Cochecton became a target of criticism from the Department of Environmental Conservation for its failure to adopt all elements of the first Climate Action Plan (CAP) received from the county earlier this year, when town supervisor Gary Maas edited the first CAP document to include only those elements with which Cochecton could currently comply. Making no attempt to conceal his satisfaction at this outcome, Maas remarked that he felt a sense of personal vindication and was pleased that feedback from other towns of Cochecton’s size and demographics had prompted the county to draft a document containing more realistic near-term goals.  Read more
