Notice of Claim served to Town of Highland regarding fracking ban
Town of Highland supervisor Andrew Boyar has confirmed that the town has been served with a Notice of Claim (NOC) from the Highland Field and Stream Club, Inc. in response to the town’s passing of Local Law 3 on July 10, 2012, which bans heavy industrial activities such as natural gas extraction. The NOC is a precursor to legal action, which may or may not ensue, according to Boyar. The matter has been referred to town attorney Michael Davidoff. It is standard practice not to comment on any form of litigation said Boyar. The town’s regular monthly meeting will be held on October 16 at 7 p.m. Read more
Eldred Key Elements releases CD
The title says it all: “We Made This Ourselves.” In a real-life, local version of the hit television show “Glee,” 23 Eldred Central School (ECS) students under the direction of their teacher, Justin Glodich, have completed their goal of producing their own CD.
The eighth- through 12th-grade students are members of the a cappella group the Eldred Key Elements. Last year, the group delivered a stirring performance for the ECS board of education. Read more

Echoes of 9/11 in Highland
The events of September 11, 2001 echoed in the Town of Highland Town Hall in two disparate ways at its September meeting, which this year fell on that date’s exact 11th anniversary. On a positive note was a discussion of the Heroes Park, a public space centered around a mounted fragment of the World Trade Center dedicated to all veterans and public safety providers. A more dubious legacy was some controversy regarding the maintenance and upgrading of emergency communications equipment around the county, generated by a national Homeland Security Department that may not be sufficiently sensitive to real local needs. St. Baldrick’s Foundation Human Line of Hope
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Eldred resident Lou Monteleone wants to make sure Sullivan County knows it. Monteleone’s awareness began in 2007 when he participated in a St. Baldrick’s (www.stbaldricks.org) signature head shaving event in Jeffersonville. “It changed my life,” Monteleone said, “and I became instantly involved.” Read more
