Highland adopts comprehensive plan

The Town of Highland Town Board voted unanimously to adopt its 2012 Comprehensive Plan following a lengthy process that involved hundreds of volunteer “person hours,” workshops and two public hearings. Copies of the plan are available at the town hall in Eldred. A zoning rewrite process is now underway. The Phase One Zoning review, focused on heavy industrial uses, has already begun. Volunteers are still needed to participate in Phase Two. Call supervisor Andrew Boyar at 845/557-8901 for more information.

ECS presents final budget

Following many months of ruthless cuts aimed at creating an austere budget, Eldred Central School District (ECS) officials presented highlights of the near-final proposed 2012-13 budget. Despite a substantial increase of 5% in health insurance and a 30% rise in employee retirement, the proposed budget represents a decrease from the 2011-12 budget of 4.55%, resulting in a total budget of $15,778,153.  Read more

Highland Comp Plan approaches adoption

Following a public hearing and regularly scheduled monthly meeting, the Town of Highland will continue toward adoption of its 2012 Comprehensive Plan. The plan is under review by the Sullivan County Planning Department and may be taken up at the town’s March meeting for adoption.  Read more

‘Convoluted’ tax cap creates confusion; ECS elementary school principal search to begin

Through most of the past year, the Eldred Central School (ECS) District has been grappling with the impacts of a contingency budget and making deep cuts in preparing the upcoming budget. Now school officials must address the impacts of the New York Tax Levy Cap approved in June 2010—and the false perception that it limits tax levy increases to two percent.  Read more
