Eldred school budget seen as viable; Months in the making
At school board meetings over the past three months, with Albany promising a tight budget for schools statewide, tears were shed over proposed teacher layoffs. There was speculation that the school would operate without a sports program and there was the specter of programs dropped. The situation, however, led Superintendent Robert Dufour into action. Walk to combat juvenile arthritis
Those who will take part in the 2013 Hudson Valley Arthritis Walk will be walking in part for two local children, Jailyn and Sami, Eldred Central School students who were identified only by their first names. Both of these young girls have been waging a war against juvenile arthritis from an early age. Juvenile arthritis is a disease of the immune system, which causes this normal defense system to attack its own cells and tissues. There are 300,000 children in the U.S. who suffer from the debilitating disease. Read more

Superintendent on state aid: ‘prognosis does not look good;’ Earth-moving machines in action
If Governor Andrew Cuomo keeps a vice-like grip on the purse strings in Albany for the next three years, it will prove to be disastrous. That’s what superintendent Robert Dufour told a packed house at the March 15 meeting of the board of the Eldred Central School District. Dufour said that the district has tapped into $700,000 of its reserve account in an attempt to compensate for paltry state aid out of Albany in recent years. If this pattern plays out for the next two years, reserves will be tapped out and the “prognosis would not look good.” Read more

Traffic stop leads to drug charges for two Pennsylvani residents
On March 13, 2013 State Police at Liberty arrested two subjects for possessing marijuana and ecstasy after a vehicle and traffic stop on Eldred -Yulan Road in the Town of Highland. At approximately 1:15pm, a Trooper patrolling the Eldred area conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle occupied by MARTIN CORA, age 23 and CHELSEA CURTIS age 23, both of Bloomsburg, PA. Read more
