Honesdale students learn about gardening

HONESDALE, PA — Ninth through 12th grade students in Gretchen Wydeen’s Foods & Fitness class at Honesdale High School planted a garden this spring, which they share with Gene Biscontini’s science class. The seeds, which were paid for by Penn State’s Wayne County Master Gardeners, were started indoors in baby food jars. The students planted strawberries, corn, sweet peppers, tomatoes and several herbs.  Read more

Eldred faculty receives award from the state

ELDRED, NY — Recently the Eldred Faculty Association (FA) received the “Lou Cammarosano” Award from New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) for their outstanding VOTE-COPE Campaign (the union’s voluntary political action fundraiser) in the Mid-Hudson Region. Elementary school students read to dogs

Monticello students visit court

MONTICELLO, NY — Fifth graders from the George L. Cooke School had the opportunity to visit Sullivan County Court and Judge Frank J. LaBuda recently. The students and teachers, Jane Sorensen, EPIC program coordinator, Mr. Prestianni, Ms. Janusas, Ms. Landau and Ms. Accardo were involved in an active discussion with Judge LaBuda regarding the types of civil and criminal cases that are handled in the Courthouse. Commissioner of Jurors George Cooke was also present to explain the importance of jury service.  Read more

Fallsburg school district to hold reunion and award scholarships

FALLSBURG, NY — The Fallsburg Alumni Association (FAA) will hold its 10th annual All Alumni Reunion and Buffet Luncheon on Saturday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fallsburg High School cafeteria. Admission is a $13 donation for one person or $25 for two (which includes a light lunch) and can be paid at the door. Advance reservations are advised.  Read more

Community College offers summer psychology course

HONESDALE, PA — Luzerne County Community College will offer courses for the summer session in Honesdale. Registration for courses in Honesdale will be held at Honesdale High School on Tuesday, May 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Classes begin on Wednesday, May 28 and end on Monday, August 4. Final exams will be held from Tuesday, August 5 through Monday, August 11. The class scheduled to be offered in Honesdale is psychology. Parents learn about Common Core educational changes

FALLSBURG, NY — The second of three town hall forums between Fallsburg Central School District (FCSD) administrators and staff to discuss Common Core educational curriculum changes with parents will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Hurleyville at the firehouse on Main Street. Community members are invited to hear about the major changes of the Common Core curriculum, developed by the New York State Department of Education, and its impact on students. Sullivan BOCES hosts animal science program open house

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — High school juniors and seniors can hear about receiving hands-on training working with animals while preparing for college and a career at an Animal Science Open House on Tuesday, April 29, from 4 to 7 p.m., to be held at Stone Wall Farms on Callicoon Center Road. Monticello wins grant to fund pre-K programs

MONTICELLO, NY — The Monticello Central School District is slated to receive a $179,800 “Priority Full-day Prekindergarten and Expanded Half-day Prekindergarten for High Need Students” grant from the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The purpose of the expanded prekindergarten program is to provide a quality early education opportunity for eligible children (age four) who reside in the Monticello Central School District.  Read more
