Lithuanian and Russian music at Woodsongs

HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Woodsongs Coffeehouse will present an evening of Russian and Lithuanian folk music on Saturday, November 5, at 7 p.m., featuring the Lithuanian folk duo Eastlande and Russian folk musician and composer Anatoly Kurlat. Host band Little Sparrow will open the concert, which will be held at the Sullivan County Museum, 265 Main St.

Eastlande musicians, Rimas Polikaitis (accordion) and Ruta Pastas Cole (violin, vocals, etc.) perform traditional and neo-folk style arrangements of Lithuanian songs, as well as today’s popular Lithuanian music.

Kurlat’s songs are all in Russian, and he rarely plays for a non-Russian speaking audience. He said “to play for a non-Russian audience is a challenge and a great pleasure — music can transcend the language barrier” (anatolykurlat.com/landa).

The concert is co-sponsored by the Sullivan County Historical Society and is made possible with funding from a Sullivan County Arts and Heritage Grant, funded by the Sullivan County Legislature and administered by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. Admission costs $8. For more information call 845/434-8044.
