Historic sawmill opens for the season

LOOKOUT, PA — The Civil-War-era, water-powered Joel Hill Sawmill is being readied for another season of programs for public viewing. The crews have been working for the past several months, testing and repairing equipment, and cleaning up last year’s sawdust, getting ready to power up the giant saw blade for the work ahead.

The mill, a cherished property of the Equinunk Historical Society, is run on five regular occasions each summer: the second weekend in July, the second weekend in August, and the first Saturday of October.

On July 9 and 10, it will be operational from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when volunteers will demonstrate the workings of the mill and lead free group tours of the premises. This is an opportunity for the whole family to see how resourceful men accomplished the most complicated tasks 150 years ago.

The Joel Hill Sawmill is located on Creek Road off Route 191. For more information call 570/224-6722 or 224-4466.
