LACKAWAXEN, PA — The Sons of Norway Bernt Balchen Lodge #3-566 will sponsor a Scandinavian Craft Fair on Saturday, September 12, at the Lackawaxen Volunteer Firehouse, 774 Rte. 590. The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there is no admission fee. Parking is free.

Lunch will be served, with traditional Norwegian panekake, lapskaus, split pea soup and open-faced sandwiches. Desserts will also be available and coffee and tea and cold drinks.

Scandinavian and American arts and crafts and demonstrations of traditional Norwegian rosemaling will be featured at the fair. Handmade Scandinavian jewelry will also be displayed, and Scandinavian sweaters and other items will await the visitors. Traditional Norwegian food, including Norwegian cheeses, fiskeboller, lefse, lingonberry jam and chocolates will be for sale.

A handmade quilt, crafted by Elsie Andersen, will be raffled off at the close of the day. Elsie has named her quilt “Shades of purple and gray.” You can buy raffle tickets at the fair.

Bernt Balchen always welcomes new members. Meetings are at 2 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, except during January and February when they take a winter break, or when there are special events planned. Besides keeping the Norwegian culture alive, Bernt Balchen Lodge raises funds for charitable organizations, collects food for the Good Cheer Food Pantry in Greeley, and contributes to the local Salvation Army, the Dessin Animal Shelter and the Gino Merli Veterans Home in Scranton.

All Scandinavians are welcome, as well as those who “just like us.” Call 570/729-7628.
