HONESDALE, PA — RiverFolk Concerts will present the multicultural South African band Sharon Katz & The Peace Train at The Cooperage, 1030 Main St., on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. The band helped Nelson Mandela end apartheid, and has continued spreading its message of peace and reconciliation through performances and workshops around the world ever since. The soon-to-be-released documentary film, “When Voices Meet,” chronicles the group’s 20-year musical journey in support of Mandela’s vision.

Blending Sharon’s African-picking style of guitar work with intricate drumming, pulsating dances, compelling lyrics and rich harmonies, the group takes you on a joyride through South Africa’s past and into the future. Performances are participatory and for all ages.

Nominated for the Grammy’s “Best World Music Album,” the group made history in 1992 when they formed South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial choir and then organized a courageous tour on board a train—The Peace Train—to promote a peaceful transition to democracy. When CNN filmed Sharon jumping out of a helicopter with her guitar in a remote area, to teach the rural people about the voting process through song, Sharon Katz & The Peace Train were propelled into an international career that has spanned four continents and coast-to-coast U.S. appearances.

The suggested donation is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Call 845/252-6783 for reservations and information. BYOB. Visit riverfolkconcerts.com or email riverfolkconcerts@frontier.com.
