Historical Society will bring characters to life at the Old Stone Jail

HONESDALE, PA — Usually people will do anything to stay out of jail, but when the Wayne County Historical Society brings history back to life at the historic Old Stone Jail on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 25 and 26, they’ll be in for a special treat (no tricks). From 6 to 9 p.m. on both evenings visitors will discover at least some of the secrets behind the thick dungeon-like walls of the stoic stone structure.

Those daring souls brave enough to attend “Jail Tales” will hear accounts of colorful inmates, night-keepers, wardens, and some clever and curious escapes brought to life by suitably costumed story-tellers.

Stories of James McCabe, Lucy Lobdell and other past occupants will include petty thieves, assorted vagrants and town drunks. On the right side of the law, visit with the sheriff and hear about sundry escapes and near-escapes, listen to the jailer’s wife who cooked meals for the prisoners, plus a few surprises since the Old Stone Jail setting will make for an eerie tableau.

The Old Stone Jail is located at 10th and Court streets, behind the Wayne County Court House in Honesdale.

Tickets for “Jail Tales” can be purchased for $10 per person in advance from the Wayne County Historical Society Main Museum at 810 Main St., or for $12 per person at the cellblock each night. Although all are welcome, WCHS does not recommend those under 16 to attend this event.

Depending on the weather, plan to dress appropriately. Additional information is available by calling the Museum at 570/253-3240, email wchs@ptd.net, or check out waynehistorypa.org or “like” our Facebook page.
